Activities

The ‘Galicia Sustainable Destination’ (GDS) initiative, promoted by the Galicia Tourism Cluster and the Galician Regional Government’s Tourism Agency (Xunta-Axencia Turismo de Galicia), had a prominent presence at the 6th International Congress on Tourism and Sport, Sportur Galicia, a leading forum for analyzing active and sports tourism from a sustainable and inclusive perspective.

  • Active and accessible tourism, two of the pillars of ‘Galicia Sustainable Destination’

One of the sessions focused on accessibility and inclusion in tourist destinations, a key area in the sector’s evolution. In this context, Laura Creo, representative of ‘Galicia Sustainable Destination’ and member of the Cluster’s technical secretariat, moderated the roundtable discussion “Where are we now: experiences from all perspectives,” which also included representatives from organizations such as Fundación Enki, Koan Consulting, Portugal Accesible and AGETAN.

During its opening remarks, the GDS initiative was presented as a strategic tool aligned with the Galicia Tourism Strategy 2030, aimed at facilitating access to sustainable, responsible, and authentic tourism experiences throughout the region. Its role in the field of active and sports tourism was particularly highlighted, where the protection of the natural environment and respect for the landscape are essential to guaranteeing the quality and continuity of these experiences.

Galicia was identified as an ideal destination for year-round sports activities, thanks to its natural diversity and a tourism model that prioritizes a reduced environmental impact, connection with the local population, and the enhancement of the region’s resources. In this sense, the profile of the active traveler fits naturally with the principles of responsible tourism, both in terms of the types of activities they undertake and the values they associate with the destination.

The importance of the product club was also emphasized as an element that brings coherence, credibility, and quality to the sustainable sports tourism offering, boosting local businesses and contributing to building a stronger, more competitive, and environmentally conscious destination.

Accessibility was another central theme of the session, understood as a key factor for social cohesion, improving the overall quality of the destination, and opening up to new markets. It was highlighted that accessibility is not incompatible with nature or authenticity; rather, it allows unique experiences to be made available to a greater number of people and reinforces Galicia’s position as a responsible and environmentally conscious region.

The panel concluded with a discussion in which participants shared experiences, challenges, and progress in accessible and inclusive tourism, highlighting a growing awareness within the sector and the increasing commitment of more and more companies to this tourism model.
