Under the slogan Love food not waste, the Consellería de Medio Ambiente in collaboration with the provincial associations of hotels and restaurants in Galicia promote the implementation of an initiative that seeks to reduce food waste in the Galician hotel sector. To this end, Medio Ambiente has signed a collaboration agreement with the four provincial associations – APEHL, Provincial association Hopitality of A Coruña, Feprohos and Federación de Hostelería de Ourense– to promote actions that promote a culture of reducing food waste, so customers will be offered the possibility of bringing food not consumed in the premises for later use in homes. This will provide the necessary support for the purchase of organic lunch boxes and bags, which must be biodegradable and reusable.
300,000, is to continue to improve waste management and to improve the guidelines for more and better recycling. Thus, the signatory associations, in which a total of 3,800 premises are grouped, will organize more than 100 environmental awareness days focused on energy saving, water consumption savings, proper waste management and recycling and, of course, the reduction of food waste, and which will begin in the four provinces next Monday. In addition, the conference will also distribute pack of LED light bulbs specially designed for catering establishments, in order to reduce energy consumption and be more environmentally efficient, in addition to tuppers and recyclable bags of the campaign, to be able to offer them to their customers.
This collaboration is part of the actions to raise awareness and improve energy efficiency and combat climate change, in which water saving days have already been held. In addition, work will also continue on further improving waste management and recycling guidelines for more and better recycling. All this with the aim of meeting the challenge set by the European Union for 2030 of reducing global food waste per capita by 50% for consumers.
