- Galicia is the second community where employment in the sector grew the most, with a rebound of 18% between April and June
The National Statistics Institute (INE) published the Active Population Survey (EPA) of the second quarter of 2023, corresponding to the months of April, May and June. As the sector recovered from the pandemic crisis, the number of people employed increased, reaching 2.86 million workers linked to tourism activities in the second quarter of this year. According to these data, one in four new jobs created in Spain belong to the tourism sector. Specifically, between April and June, tourism-related activities registered 146,678 more employees than in the same period of 2022.
Galicia is the second community in which employment in tourism activities grew the most, with a rebound of 18.3%; standing only behind La Rioja, with an increase of 40.1%. During the second quarter of this year, more than 130,000 occupied positions were registered, compared to 109,900 in the same period in 2022, so that in the last twelve months Galicia added more than 20,000 new workers in the tourism sector.
More employment, less unemployment
The national economy registered an unemployment rate of 11.6%, while the percentage of tourist activities was 8.5%. With all this, this figure registers half a point more than the rate registered this year, although Turespaña indicates that this is due to the increase in the active population in the sector, which has chained four consecutive quarters of increases.
In the sector, there are more unemployed women (9.1%) than men (7.9%), but in both cases the number decreased compared to last year, where women had an unemployment rate of 9, 4%.
Workers with temporary contracts fell by almost 20%, with the sector’s temporary employment rate standing at 19.6%. Permanent contracts increased by 18%, representing 80.4% of the total. In the case of the self-employed, the number fell by 6%, reaching 482,000.
In this quarter, the main tourist activities experienced growth: the hotel industry increased by 7.1%, travel agencies had a year-on-year variation of 0.4%, while passenger transport was 10.8%.
