The Cluster Tourism of Galicia makes positive balance of a summer characterized by instability that has demonstrated better behavior than 2018

Considers the rise in prices to be very positive, making it possible to opt for quality tourism, based on excellent services and facilities that attract new market segments

So far this year more than 3.5 million travelers have chosen Galicia for their days off, 5% more than in the first eight months of 2018

After the publication of data on the arrival of foreign tourists and occupancy in the establishments extrahoteleros during the month of August by the INE, the Cluster Tourism of Galicia makes a very positive balance of the summer season, understood as the months of July and August, confirming an improvement of five points both in the number of visitors and overnight stays over the same period last year. To these increases is added the maintenance of the stay and occupation and the interannual growth of almost two points in hotel prices, which has allowed the profitability of the Galician tourism sector as a whole to rise by 4.7 points.

According to the data compiled from INE statistics, Galicia is this summer as one of the areas of Spain that shows greater dynamism in the tourism sector during the central summer months with growths up to four points higher than the country as a whole, which records growth of just one point in both hotel and extrahotel accommodation.

Thus, in July and August, Galicia recorded just over 1.5 million tourists and reached 3.9 million overnight stays, a figure that returns to place Galicia in record summer occupations, similar to the summer of 2017. This growth represents an increase of 5.4 points both in the number of travelers and overnight stays, an outstanding growth if we consider that it occurs in the context of a somewhat unstable summer climate, which demonstrates the attractiveness of Galician territory and its consolidation as the fifth favorite destination of Spaniards during the summer season, accumulating 7% of the total number of overnight stays that occurred in Spain last month. In addition, so far this year more than 3.5 million travelers have chosen Galicia for their days off, 5% more than in the first eight months of 2018, reaching almost 7.8 million nights in these first eight months.

Improving profitability

In addition to these figures, the sector has managed to improve its profitability by maintaining an average stay of two and a half nights in the case of hotels, which is growing significantly in other types of accommodation such as tourist apartments (4.7 nights on average in August) or camping sites (3.9 nights on average in August).

With an average room price per night of 67.97€ in July and August, Galician hotels have managed to improve with respect to last year by 1.3 points the average daily turnover of hotels per room occupied (ADR) and 4.3 the RevPAR, which is conditioned by the occupancy registered in hotel establishments, the result of the increase in travelers, overnight stays and a slight increase in prices, a satisfaction that puts the sector on the right track but with the aim of continuing to work to increase profit margins that allow us to assume a clear commitment to professionalization, quality and renewal of the Galician tourism industry, essential to achieve a modern and competitive sector.

Occupancy levels, which averaged around 60% in the months of July and August in the Galician territory as a whole, reaching 70% in the case of hotels in August, as well as average income per available room still leave room for improvement for the sector which makes it essential to continue advancing in the deseasonalization, attraction of new market segments and specialization, through the commitment to the creation of new tourism products.
