With 7,000 meters of galleries, the Cova do Rei Cintolo once again welcomes visitors in 2025, offering an accessible route and a more challenging one leading to its underground river.
The largest cave in Galicia is now open to the public again, offering a unique experience for exploration enthusiasts. With 7,000 meters of galleries, the Cova do Rei Cintolo, located in Mondoñedo (Lugo), establishes itself as an essential destination for those seeking an underground adventure full of history and nature.
Two ways to discover this underground treasure
Since March 1, visitors can choose between two guided tours. The more accessible option is the Central Gallery, a 300-meter route designed for those seeking an educational visit suitable for all audiences. For the more adventurous, there’s the opportunity to venture to the underground river, a more demanding route that requires good physical condition. The price for the first option is 20 euros, while the full experience costs 40 euros.
In addition to its spectacular geological formations, the cave houses an important archaeological heritage. First documented in 1873, human remains from the Upper Paleolithic, lithic tools, and evidence of medieval settlements have been found inside. It is also home to various species of bats and small invertebrates, further enhancing its ecological and scientific value.
Hours and how to book
During March, visits to the Central Gallery are available on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays at two times: 11:00 and 16:00 hours. Starting in April, an additional session at 18:30 will be added, and in the summer, it will be possible to visit any day of the week. The route to the underground river, however, is available every day but requires prior reservation.
