Galicia doubled the number of travellers and overnight stays compared to the same month in 2020 and has already reached pre-pandemic figures.

After the good results harvested during last summer, the figures for travellers and overnight stays during September have confirmed the strength of the Galician tourism sector. The data collected in its latest report by the National Institute of Statistics show that last month almost half a million tourists (459,772 to be exact) chose Galicia as their leisure destination, which represents a growth of 117% compared to September 2020, when just over 211,000 people enjoyed Galicia. This increase in travellers also had a direct consequence on the increase in overnight stays, which went from a total of 418,692 in September 2020 to 932,661 during the same month of this year, placing the increase at 122%.

Moreover, these good figures recorded by the Galician tourism sector during the last month put it back in a very similar situation to the one it experienced in the period prior to the covid pandemic. The number of travellers last September was 87% of the total registered in September 2019 and the number of overnight stays reached 90%, percentages notably higher than the average for the Spanish tourism sector as a whole, where travellers and overnight stays last month were, respectively, 25% and 32% lower than in September 2019.

The good evolution of the sector in Galicia can also be seen in the percentage of hotel occupancy, since the 45.9 % registered during September of this year in the community as a whole is almost double the 23.4 % of the same month last year and almost equals the pre-pandemic 50.5 % of September 2019.

The latest INE report also includes data from Fisterra, since with a 70.34% that town on the Costa da Morte and goal of one of the routes of the Way of St. James was one of the tourist points of the national set with the highest percentage of occupancy during last September.
