The Tourism Sectoral Conference approved, this week, the 175 beneficiary interventions of the third extraordinary call for the Tourism Sustainability Plans in Destinations 2023 program, financed entirely with the Next Generation EU funds of the Recovery Plan. This resolution closes the commitments of Component 14 of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, whose objective is to transform and modernize the Spanish tourism sector by increasing its competitiveness and resilience.
484 Destination Tourism Sustainability Plans (PSTD) and 18 Destination Cohesion Actions (ACD) were submitted to this call. With this resolution, Galicia receives €23,235,000 to be distributed among 8 PSTD and 1 ACD.
For the distribution, economic criteria were taken into account (such as the percentage of the tourism GDP with respect to the regional GDP or the drop in the affiliation of workers in the tourism sector), territorial (such as the percentage of the area of each Autonomous Community with respect to the national area or population density) and tourism (taking into account the number of tourists and tourist expenditure in 2019).
Dividing by province, two interventions will be carried out in A Coruña. The first, in Betanzos, has as its objective the recovery and dynamism of the historic center of the area with the recovery of green spaces, the design of guided interpretive routes and cycling routes, or the implementation of a sustainable mobility plan. With the second, in Ferrolterra, the batteries of the region will be rehabilitated for their dynamism as a sustainable tourist destination, highlighting the cultural, coastal and military heritage.
For Lugo, the Ribeira Sacra Tourism Consortium plan was approved, a project included in the Blue/Sol National Tourism Plan. This initiative seeks to improve the mobility of the territory through the implementation of shuttle services in the boarding areas for the realization of river routes, the conversion of hiking routes into non-motorized sustainable mobility routes, or the implementation of a laboratory of experiences for the creation of a new tourist offer.
Two performances will be held in Ourense. On the one hand, for Allariz, the plan was approved whose main objective is to develop new products to improve sustainability and competitiveness. This includes measures such as the recovery of the Santan spring, the intervention of the Toy Museum, and the improvement of connectivity around the Castle of Allariz. On the other hand, for Ourense, a cycle path parallel to the flow of the Xallas river will be created with the aim of structuring this territory with a sustainable mobility alternative.
Finally, three sustainability plans will be carried out in Pontevedra. The first will be with the Asociación Mar de Santiago, with actions such as the renaturation of the Puerto Piñeiro lagoon, the conditioning of the river beach, or the construction of a thalassotherapy center in Vilanova de Arousa. The second will be the revitalization plan for the historic center of Bouzas, in Vigo. This project will create new assets by expanding and digitizing tourist centers with the aim of expanding the tourist offer and betting on sustainability. The third is the Tui plan, which seeks the recovery of the walls and the beautification of the area of the city within the walls.
In addition to the PSTDs, a Cohesion Action between Destinations (ACD) was also approved: Galicia, reference thermal destination. The objective of this action is to promote sustainable thermal tourism in Galicia, making the Community the leading destination worldwide in terms of thermal tourism, highlighting our mineral-medicinal wealth and offering travelers a unique experience.
