The foundation of the ATLANTIC_SUNSET project is to promote the contemplation of the sunset as a unique, sustainable, and integrating form of tourism in the Atlantic. This initiative was born through the association of eight institutions from four countries: the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC), the Galicia-North Portugal Euroregional Studies Center Foundation (CEER), Wireless Galicia, the University of Seville, the University Porto, the University of Angers and the University of Galway.
The project, which received more than one million euros in funding within the framework of the Interreg Atlantic Area 2021-2017 program, is coordinated by USC professors Ángel Miramontes, Jorge Mira and Rubén Lois. Its objective is to support innovative initiatives that contribute to the growth of the Atlantic area through joint actions and the exchange of good practices.
ATLANTIC_SUNSET constitutes a milestone in the sustainable tourist use of the solar resource far from the great European sunset destinations. The project focuses on the experience of different research groups in the field of physics and geography to, in addition to taking advantage of the natural beauty of the Atlantic sunset, identify and value local endogenous resources associated with the sun.
The basis of the project was a study carried out by the USC Electromagnetism professor, Jorge Mira, on European sunsets. Through his work, strategic points were identified in Galicia and Portugal for the observation of the last continental sunsets. Now, within the framework of ATLANTIC_SUNSET, the research will be linked to the symbolic and historical coincidence of the Galician and French Finis Terrae, the Land’s End of the United Kingdom, and their equivalents in Norway and Ireland. As a result of this project, some of the best places to enjoy the moment of twilight will be identified.
