The countdown begins to celebrate World Tourism Day, which has been commemorated every September 27 since 1980. Its purpose is to raise awareness in the international community about the social, cultural, political and economic value of tourism.
This year the events promoted by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) will be developed under the motto “Tourism and green investments” with the aim of providing better support for successful compliance of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals.
The UNWTO considers the global disruption caused by COVID-19 in the tourism sector an opportunity to redefine and calibrate the direction and discourse adopted in tourism investments. In this way, investments become one of the key priorities for the recovery of tourism and future growth and development.
The World Tourism Organization stresses that more and better targeted investments are needed so that tourism can put into practice its possibilities of offering opportunities to people, building resilience, accelerating climate measures, greater sustainability for the planet and bringing an inclusive prosperity around the pillars of innovation and entrepreneurship.
The celebration of the international day of tourism will highlight the need to invest in projects that work for people (investing in education and skills), the planet (investing in sustainable infrastructure and accelerating the green transformation), and prosperity (investing in innovation, technology and entrepreneurship).
