Tambo Island will become a tourist, sustainable and cultural reference. This was made clear by the president of the Xunta de Galicia, Alfonso Rueda, during his visit to the islet of the Ría de Pontevedra, accompanied by the Minister of Culture, Education, Training and Universities; the mayor of Poio, Ángel Moldes; and the architect Sergio Portela, coordinator of the Plan of Uses of the island and promoter of the project ‘Tambo, a illa soñada, a illa posible’.
During the visit, the president of the Xunta affirmed that the island “is one of the many wonders that we have in Galicia, and therefore, we have a duty to preserve it”, highlighting the heritage and natural value of this space and betting on its revitalization as a tourist and cultural destination from the perspective of sustainability.
This island, with centuries of history, belongs to the Council of Poio, has a total area of 28 hectares and reaches an altitude of 91 meters. It is a space that is still unknown to a large percentage of the population of the region and that, after being closed to tourism due to its past military nature, was ceded to the City Council in 2022.
With the objective of its sustainable tourist conversion, the Xunta de Galicia advanced its availability to collaborate in the adaptation of the castro of the island and in the cataloging of the patrimonial assets of this area. In the same way, it also undertook to process the declaration of the territory as a Natural Area of Local Interest (ENIL).
Currently, various guided tours of the island enclave are already being carried out, although to access it it is necessary to request authorized access through the tourism page of the City Council of Poio. The duration of the visit varies between two and a half and three hours, with an extension of 2 kilometers. For your visit, in addition to the access authorization, you must have a ticket from the shipping companies that carry out organized trips from Porto de Combarro.
