The old slate quarries of Carballeda de Valdeorras will become a new claim as far as industrial tourism is concerned. The project “Blackboard. Recovery in areas with extraction processes” is a work by the architects Carlos Quintáns Eiras and Zaida García Requejo conceived to boost tourism through the landscape assets of the slate. The initiative arises from the collaboration between the Slate Cluster and the Carballeda City Council, with the support of the Ministry of Industry.
This plan includes the revegetation of the quarry walls to recover the greenery of the old mountain, and the repair of six abandoned buildings. A small pavilion will also be rehabilitated to convert it into a viewpoint and enjoy the best views of the site. The complex will also have toilets, a store, spaces for rest and leisure, and a museum to learn more about the works linked to the slate.
The architects of the initiative have been interested in research on production processes and the possible improvement of geographical environments for years. Now, the architectural project is one of the finalists in the category of research and dissemination of the call for the Spanish Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism, promoted by the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda. Of the 150 works presented, only 25 will be judged next September at the XVI edition of the BEAU.
