Accommodation, activities and projects linked to the Galician Tourism Cluster are committed to revitalising the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela, prioritising the care and development of the environment.

The Way of St. James represents one of the main tourist engines of the Galician community. In 2021, despite the restrictions caused by the COVID-19, more than 178,900 pilgrims visited Galicia undertaking march in one of the nine routes that lead to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, according to data from the International Pilgrim Welcome Centre.

Aware of its importance as an economic engine, especially in 2022 as Xacobean Year, but without losing sight of the respect for the environment, generating the least possible impact while allowing the development of the environment and culture, several tourism companies linked to the Galician Tourism Cluster have created around the Camino sustainable tourism projects that are shown as success stories in their different modalities.

The agency specialising in the Xacobean routes, Tee Travel, promotes from its initiative #CaminoClean a Camino with which “leave mark without leaving a footprint”. Responsible consumption, activities and local consumption at the stops of the Camino, or the promotion of sustainable transport through its line Camino in bike are some of the proposals that this agency offers to those who have it to plan their pilgrimage route.

As an alternative to hostels, several accommodations have made the Camino their main motivation for the development of their hotel offer, being a lever for sustainable growth of their territories, helping to curb depopulation and promoting local heritage.

This is the case of the Hotel Pousada Real or the Hotel Roquiño, both located in Caldas de Reis and holders of the Q seal of tourist quality. Among its various activities, both accommodations have acquired a strong commitment to the promotion of their region, promoting local cuisine and knowledge of the natural environment of Caldas and Umia River as a thermal enclave where pilgrims can enjoy a well deserved rest.
