With the publication of the INE occupancy surveys on non-hotel tourist accommodation (apartments, campsites, rural tourism accommodation and hostels), Galicia closes the year by far surpassing the figure of 5 million visitors. Finally, 5,103,883 people chose Galicia as a tourist destination last year, fulfilling the expectations of the sector and the administration to reach this symbolic figure that confirms a growth of around three points annually. In the same way, forecasts were also fulfilled regarding overnight stays, which finally totalled 10,662,723 nights, between hotels and extra-hotel establishments.
The latest data published by the INE, relating to the latter indicate that in December there were just over 15,000 people who traveled to Galicia and chose this type of establishment for their stay. This figure represents an increase of 3.72% compared to December 2016. There were also improved figures in overnight stays, which were more than 39 thousand, which is an improvement of 15 points compared to the figures for the same period last year.
Rural tourism, camping sites and tourist apartments improved during the month of December, also increasing the average stay in the case of rural tourism, which rises by 15% to reach 2.23 although the average stay in tourist apartments remains higher, which is around three nights. In all typologies, the majority of domestic residents are still foreign tourists.
In the case of Spain, the number of travellers who opted for this type of accommodation was 6.4 million in December, 4.2% more than in the same month of 2016. Residents’ overnight stays increased by 16.1% while those of non-residents fell by 1.1%.
