This summer was dominated by last-minute bookings and a reduction in average stays, but with a high level of turnover, which enabled good levels of occupancy and turnover to be achieved.

The month of August reached the highest occupancy level in Galician tourist establishments with average percentages of 90 % and above. In June these percentages were between 70 % and 80 %, meeting the expectations set at the beginning of the summer season. These are data from a study carried out by the Galicia Tourism Cluster based on a survey of its members.

The document shows a very positive balance for the sector also in terms of turnover, with historical figures that allow to recover and even exceed the levels of 2019. In general terms, turnover grew thanks to the increase in fares, but this increase was not passed on proportionally to profitability, given the considerable rises in energy and supply costs.

With regard to the behaviour of travellers, it should be noted that last-minute bookings and a reduction in average stays prevailed, but with a high level of turnover that enabled good levels of occupancy and turnover to be achieved.

In terms of nationality, the predominance of national tourism was maintained, although the recovery of the international market is beginning to pick up, with the influx of Portuguese and French tourists standing out.

By areas, the province of Pontevedra met expectations, with occupancy rates and average rates higher than in 2019. Occupancy in July was around 80% and 90% in August, with good prospects for the month of September, with a forecast of 70%.

Sanxenxo reached record numbers, higher than in 2019. In July, hotel occupancy ranged between 75 and 80 %, reaching 83 % in the case of flats. In August, occupancy exceeded 90 % in practically all the different types of establishments, with 3 and 4-star hotels standing out, reaching 93 %.

Forecasts were also met in the city of A Coruña, whose hotels recorded occupancies of between 85 and 90 % and turnover grew by 15 % compared to 2019. In Santiago de Compostela the average occupancy rate was around 75%, although the establishments in the Galician capital were full at key moments such as the Apostle’s Festivities or the concerts of the O Son del Camino festival. The sector is optimistic for the autumn months thanks to the Xacobeo and the busy agenda of congresses for the rest of the year.

Costa da Morte recorded high occupancy rates in August (85-90 %), after a more modest month of July. In any case, the figures for 2019 and 2021 were exceeded and the prospects for September are good, thanks to the expected arrival of international pilgrims and pilgrims.

In the city of Ferrol there is satisfaction with the results of the summer, with stable occupancy rates of around 75-80 %, which rose to 95 % in the first days of August and reached 100 % on the long weekends of July 25th and August 15th.

In the province of Lugo, expectations were also reach, with percentages ranging between 70 and 80 % in July and between 80 and 90 % in August. The first fortnight of August was particularly positive, with occupancy rates above 95 % in A Mariña and Ribeira Sacra on the 15 August long weekend. In the latter area, occupancy in August was around 90 %, 4 points away from the historic month of August 2019.

In the province of Ourense, the average occupancy rate was around 80% this summer, with a particularly good performance between July 15th and August 15th. Short stays stand out, especially for tourists who come to discover Galicia and make a first stop in the province of Ourense. Finally, the field of rural tourism also reflected a good summer, even reaching levels close to 90%. In the interior, the areas most affected by the fires suffered, with cancellations. Although there is some uncertainty about the coming months, the sector has launched initiatives such as the Gastronomic Autumn, which aim to encourage consumption in the remainder of the year.
