The recovery experienced last year by the Galician tourism sector has also been seen in the data on spending by foreign visitors during the summer. According to the experimental survey just released by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), during the third quarter of last year tourists arriving from beyond Spain’s borders spent a total of 267.9 million euros in Galicia, which is 85% more than the 144.7 million euros spent during the same period in 2020.

These 267.9 million are still far from the 485.9 million euros recorded in the third quarter of 2019 (prior to the covid pandemic) because of the restrictions that are still in force in many countries to travel abroad, but reflects a slightly better evolution than the national average. This recovery trend is also evident in terms of daily expenditure per visitor, since the average of 63 euros recorded in Galicia during the third quarter of 2021 represents an increase of 9 euros compared to the same period in 2020 and allows it to regain a position in the ranking of spanish regions.

As for the weight of the countries of origin of the visitors in the tourist expenditure made in Galicia, Portugal continues to lead the list with almost 59 million euros (22% of the total) followed by France with 42 million (15.31%) and the United States with 27.8 million (10.39%). But the ranking takes a turn if the average daily expenditure per visitor is examined. In this case, Mexicans take first place with an average of 125 euros per day, followed by the Chinese, with 111 euros, and the Americans, with 102, while the French and Portuguese fall to seventeenth and eighteenth place in the ranking prepared by the INE with 59 and 58 euros of average expenditure per person per day in Galicia.
