Valdoviño

The ABANCA Galicia Classic Surf Pro was officially presented this Tuesday (August 27) at Pantín beach (Valdoviño, Ferrolterra), in an act where the Conselleiro de Cultura e Turismo, Román Rodríguez, and the Secretary General of Equality, Susana López Abella, highlighted the international character of this sport event included in the World Surf League (WSL) circuit, which received in its last edition more than 1000.000 visitors, among them about 350 sportsmen and women from 31 countries.

“The event has had a great jump of quality this year that places Galicia in the international top together with New York or Australia, among others”, pointed out the conselleiro. “The ABANCA Galicia Classic Surf Pro is a sports action that has a tourist repercussion of first level, since it takes advantage of a natural resource as it is our Galician coast, ideal for the development of a sport as the surf”, he explained.

The Abanca Galicia Classic Surf Pro, which celebrates its thirty-second edition in Ferrolterra until 7 September, is the most important surfing championship in Spain and the fourth longest in the world.

World Surf Center

The ABANCA Galicia Classic Surf Pro is, together with the one that took place this month in California, one of the QS/10.000, which brings together male and female competitions, an unprecedented event in Europe. In addition, this year one of the only four events of the World Longboard Championship (the only one in Europe, together with Noosa (Australia), New York and Taiwan) will be held in Pantín, which is fundamental for the classification of the next Olympic Games in Tokyo, where surfing will be an Olympic sport for the first time.

Outdoor projection and deseasonalisation

The head of Culture and Tourism stresses the momentum of the Xunta to this event, because “the internationalization and outreach of the community is one of the objectives of the Galician Government in the tourism sector. He also wanted to put this event as an example of tourism model, to offer experiences based on the particularities of each territory in order to attract visitors throughout the year to different areas of the Galician geography.
