Cabo Silleiro Lighthouse Reimagined as a Sustainable Hotel: A Model for Coastal Innovation and Differentiation

Galicia has taken a significant step forward in its sustainable tourism strategy with the opening of a new hotel within the historic Cabo Silleiro lighthouse in Baiona. This initiative, the first of its kind in the province of Pontevedra, combines heritage conservation, the intelligent reuse of public infrastructure, and a differentiated tourism offering — all within the framework of Spain’s Coastal Law and a commitment to sustainability.

The project, backed by a public concession and managed by the company Lighthouse Baiona, allows for the dual use of the lighthouse: maintaining its essential maritime signaling function while introducing high-quality accommodation and dining services aimed at visitors seeking authentic, one-of-a-kind experiences.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by regional, local, and port authorities, including Cesáreo Pardal, President of the Galician Tourism Cluster, and Jesús Picallo, Vice President. Both emphasized the relevance of this type of initiative in diversifying the tourism model and creating added value without compromising environmental or cultural resources.

“The transformation of Cabo Silleiro shows how tourism can generate economic and social value in a sustainable way. It’s a clear example of innovation through respect — a replicable model that contributes to the desaisonalisation and repositioning of Galicia as a quality destination,” said Pardal.

Jesús Picallo highlighted that “recovering iconic spaces for responsible tourism is a smart strategy that bridges the gap between our cultural heritage and the expectations of today’s traveler — more demanding, more conscious, and in search of unique experiences.”

The new hotel features 17 rooms and various communal areas, covering more than 2,800 square meters, with an additional outdoor parcel of approximately 1,900 square meters. The architectural integrity and original function of the lighthouse remain intact, with the site continuing to operate as a vital beacon for maritime traffic.

Cabo Silleiro now joins other successful lighthouse conversions in Galicia, such as Punta Insua (Carnota) and Illa Pancha (Ribadeo), reinforcing a growing trend that values coastal heritage, promotes innovation, and strengthens Galicia’s positioning as a sustainable, forward-looking destination.
