Within the framework of the objectives of setting up sustainable tourism, the County Council of Pontevedra has launched the initiative Marisqueo en las Rías Baixas, which will allow participants to get in touch, free of charge, with the whole process that revolves around the collection of seafood in the estuary. Through four routes that are held on 14, 15, 28 and 29 April, participants, 25 in each session, will receive a talk on the shellfishing process and may conduct a practical workshop on shellfishing in the waters of the estuary, with the support of the shellfish workers AmarCarril, and in which they will receive training on this trade and its history.
With this experience, the aim is to transmit the history of Galician shellfishing to the new generations and instill in society a growing respect and consideration for the profession, as a guarantee to raise awareness of the problems affecting shellfishing on foot in Galicia: social consideration, generational replacement, poaching and pollution. These “shellfishing in the Rías Baixas” routes combine the tourist and environmental aspects, thus raising the awareness of the local population about the conservation and enhancement of our tourist assets and our estuaries as a resource with enormous potential, which must be optimised in a sustainable manner.
