The new strategic plan for the City of Culture emphasises its value as a tourist resource

The document was presented at an event attended by numerous representatives of the cultural and business world, including the president of the Galicia Tourism Cluster.

Tourism forms part of the areas of action contemplated in the second strategic plan of the City of Culture, which was presented last Saturday 18 December by the Regional Minister of Culture, Education and University, Román Rodríguez, in the facilities of the site located in Compostela’s Monte Gaiás. The document reflects the importance that the City of Culture plays as a tourist resource and includes various actions designed to strengthen its ties with the Way of St. James and the celebration of the Xacobeo. The aim is to enrich the experience of the pilgrimage and expand the range of tourist resources in Santiago de Compostela with the ultimate goal of increasing the number of visitors by 40% by 2027 to 1.4 million a year.

The strategic plan, presented in the recently inaugurated Fontán Building before a large representation from the world of business and culture, including the president of the Galicia Tourism Cluster, Cesáreo Pardal, foresees an investment of around 30 million euros to double the value that the City of Culture brings to Galician society over the next five years. To achieve this, more than 5,000 activities are planned that will contribute to boosting creativity and innovation in Galicia. The strategic plan forecasts that these activities will increase the number of participants by 43% by 2027. Likewise, the proposals organised by companies, institutions and social groups will be encouraged to increase from around 280 to more than half a thousand per year.

In the specific area of tourism development, the strategic plan proposes to emphasise the role of the City of Culture as a “top level Galician and universal tourist resource, both for cultural tourism and MICE tourism, as well as for visitors in general”, placing value on “the spaces, the architecture and the environment of the Green Gaiás”. The document includes as actions to be developed in this area the creation of itineraries to visit the site as a cultural space that can be included by tour operators and travel agencies in their programs, and the realization of presentations of Gaiás in the main international fairs of the tourism sector.
