The INE confirms the 2023 record for Spanish tourism: 85.1 million tourists and 108,662 million in spending

New highs for Spanish tourism. During 2023, Spain received a total of 85.1 million international tourists, who spent 108,662 million euros, according to INE data. Figures that confirm the forecasts of a record year for Spanish tourism.

 

The 85.1 million foreign visitors represent an increase of 18.7% compared to 2022 (with 71.7 million), and exceed by 1.9% the record figure of 83.5 million so far, reached in the year prior to the pandemic, 2019.

 

The main countries of residence of tourists who visited Spain were the United Kingdom, France and Germany. The arrival of resident tourists from the United Kingdom, the first country of origin for foreign visitors to Spain, increased by 14.6% and reached 17.32 million. 11.81% million arrived from France, 17% more; and from Germany 10.80 million, 10.6% more.

 

The number of visitors from the United States grew the most, by 38.6%, reaching 3.88 million in spending. Among the largest year-on-year increases in visitors, Italian visitors stand out, 21.2% more than in 2022, with 4.86 million visitors.

 

Catalonia was the autonomous community that received the most tourists, with 18 million international visitors. Galicia also experienced a record 2023, without being a Jacobean year, adding more than 7 million tourists: 4,987,990 stayed in hotels; 350,745 in campsites; 255,616 in tourist apartments; 200,582 in rural tourism accommodations; and 1,226,236 in hostels, adding a total of 7,021,236 tourists.

 

Spent

 

Regarding the spending of international tourists in 2023, the 108 million represent 24.7% more than the previous year (87,061 million), and 18.2% more than in 2019 (91,912 million).

 

The average expenditure per tourist increased by 5%, standing at 1,278 euros, with an average daily expenditure of 175 euros (8% more).

 

The country that spent the most was the United Kingdom, with 19,947 million euros, 16.3% more than in 2023. Germany follows, with 12,972 million and an increase of 12.6%; and France, with 9,767 million and an increase of 18.7%.
