The regional administration expects that the initiative will benefit more than 12,000 people in the next two years

With the aim of promoting domestic tourism, deseasonalise hotel occupancy and promote better knowledge of the community, the Xunta de Galicia has decided to launch the programme Elige Galicia, a programme of tourist and leisure stays financed by the regional government and which will benefit children under 30, families with children under 55 and people over 55, which will mean that the initiative will benefit 12,800 people between 2020 and 2021, according to the Xunta’s calculations.

The programme, which will have a budget of 1.6 M€ to finance 40% of stays in provinces other than the place of origin, consists of four modalities: Holidays in coastal areas, Routes of historical and cultural heritage, Routes of nature and mountain and Stays in spas.

The modality Vacation in coastal areas will offer 6.700 places the next two years, it will have a duration of 5 days and four nights, the lodging will be in hotels of 3 stars or superior and it will include a minimum of 3 visits or activities of half day.

In the case of the Routes of historical and cultural heritage, with 2,500 places available between 2020 and 2021, will have a duration of 3 days and 2 nights, accommodation will be in hotels of at least 2 stars, will have guide services and will include cultural visits with historical-artistic relevance.

On the other hand, the Nature and Mountain Routes will offer another 2,500 places over the next two years and will last 3 days and 2 nights in 2-star hotels or higher. In addition to specialized guide services, there will be 2 excursions or hiking activities and / or active tourism.

Finally, in the case of the Stays in spas, the duration will be of 5 days and 4 nights in lodgings of 2 stars or superior to a distance not superior to 20 kilometers of the spa, thalasso or establishment of health and well-being. The programme will include, in addition to daily access to the establishment, one treatment per person and stay at no additional cost as well as special reduced prices for other treatments. There will also be a minimum of two excursions.

For seniors, all modalities include transport from the 7 Galician cities.

Regarding the development of the program, the president of the Xunta explained that the first step will be the hiring of services through competitive competition and will be in the first half of 2020 when the call is opened. The inaugural start is scheduled for March after making the selection of beneficiaries by lottery with reservation of places for special groups such as large families, people with disabilities or low income
