The Pontevedra municipality of Valga will see the former Porto Piñeiro clay mine transformed into a new sustainable tourist and leisure attraction. The project, promoted by the Galician Regional Government (Xunta de Galicia) as part of the Mar de Santiago Sustainable Tourism Destination Plan (PSTD), will have an investment of €550,000.
The Director of Tourism of Galicia, Xosé Merelles, visited the area to learn about the project firsthand, which includes environmental restoration, the creation of trails, and energy efficiency improvements. The goal is to transform a degraded area into a resource that adds scenic, environmental, and economic value to the region.
The rehabilitated mine will be integrated into the Mar de Santiago geodestination, which includes Valga, Catoira, Pontecesures, and Vilanova de Arousa. This project is part of a comprehensive plan financed with €1.7 million from European NextGeneration funds and seeks to diversify Galicia’s tourism offering, enhancing its natural and cultural heritage.
Merelles emphasized that these types of projects reinforce Galicia’s strategy to position itself as a leading thermal, natural, and cultural destination, promoting sustainability and revitalizing rural areas.
