Innovation and technology to boost the tourism sector in the Euroregion Galicia-North Portugal

The City Council and the Provincial Council of Ourense promote, with the collaboration of the University of Vigo, the Hackathon – Laboratory of Ideas and Innovation.

The deadline to register for this project, open to students, teachers and other people interested in tourism development, will be open until 26 September.

The activities will run until mid-October and the best proposals will win almost 4,000 euros in prizes.

The challenges facing the tourism sector can also be tackled through innovation and the possibilities offered by digitalisation and new technologies. Under this premise and with the aim of putting it into practice in the Euroregion Galicia-North Portugal, the City Council of Ourense and the Provincial Council of Ourense, in collaboration with the University of Vigo (Ourense Campus) and other actors such as the General Secretariat of Employment of the Xunta de Galicia, the Portuguese municipalities of Vilanova de Famalicâo, Melgaço and Paredes de Coura and the University of Minho, are promoting the Hackathon – Laboratory of Ideas and Innovation 2022.

The event is open to anyone of legal age, whether students, teachers or any other person who has a direct or indirect interest in contributing to the development of tourism in the region, who lives in Galicia or the North of Portugal and who is willing to share ideas and propose solutions. They will participate in groups of between 3 and 5 members, which can be formed by the interested parties themselves by registering as a team or formed by the organisation with those participants who have signed up individually.

The three axes on which they will work will be the promotion of the value of the natural and cultural heritage of the Euroregion, the improvement of the potential economic return on the territory within a sustainable framework and the integration of technology and creativity in tourism experiences. The projects must be focused on one or more of the differentiating elements of the territory, such as thermalism, designations of origin, the entroido, the Ribeira Sacra, the Cathedral of Santiago, O Courel or the Pasarelas del Paiva, among others.

The registration period will be open until 26 September. On the 27th and 28th of this month, participants will be selected and from the 29th of September to the 7th of October, the mentoring and development phase will take place. The finalists will be selected on 8 and 9 October and the on-site final phase of the Hackathon is scheduled for 14 and 15 October. The best projects will share almost 4,000 euros in prizes: 2,000 euros for the winner, 1,000 for the second, 500 for the third and 300 euros for the fourth.
