Galicia surpasses the barrier of 10 thousand ship transits in a year in all its ports

The number of ships that choose the ports of Rías Baixas to call increases, with a year-on-year increase of 18%, with Muros and Combarro being the ports that register the greatest number of ships.

According to the data provided by the managers of the nautical recreational facilities to Portos de Galicia, 2018 concludes with about 10,150 ships in transit that passed through the Galician ports, representing an overall year-on-year increase of 5%. The president of Portos de Galicia, Jose Juan Duran, stressed that, for the first time, Galicia passes the barrier of 10,000 transits in one year, which proves the upward trend of this activity. A particularly noteworthy increase in the Rías Baixas, which closes the year with an interannual increase of 18% in the number of ships in transit that passed through their ports. A total of 7,400 ships in transit were registered this year in the autonomous ports of the Rías Baixas, the coastal strip between Muros and Tui.

In the province of Pontevedra as a whole, the balance of transits was also very positive, with an increase of 50%, standing at 4,538 ships received in the province as a whole. As far as the estuary of Pontevedra is concerned, 2,500 boats were registered, 13% more than in 2017. Thus, the province of Pontevedra confirms the consolidation of this port activity in the community as a whole, which had already experienced in recent years a significant rise and is maintaining good results.

According to these data, the busiest port was Muros, with 1277 boats, followed by the Combarro marina, with 937. By municipality, Sanxenxo was the town hall with the most arrivals, 1,134 at the Portonovo and Sanxenxo docks, followed by Baiona.

Durán Hermida insisted that for Portos de Galicia, the capture of new transits is a “structural line of work”, as stated in the Strategic Plan for Recreational Nautical 2012-2020, which the public body is putting into practice.

In this regard, he added that to boost these arrivals, are developing promotional activities of marinas in Galicia nationally and internationally, such as the recent presence at the boat shows of Southampton (United Kingdom), La Rochelle and Paris (France), or participation planned for next January in Fitur.
