A dozen Galician Assets of Cultural Interest will share almost 23 million euros through this project promoted with European funds.
The president of the Cluster, Cesáreo Pardal, participated in the presentation of the project of rehabilitation and valorisation of this monument in the acropolis of Monterrei.
The important historical and architectural heritage of Galicia is also a valuable tourist attraction. In order to make both aspects compatible, and to do so from the perspective of sustainability, the Administration is promoting, thanks to European funds, the Xacobeo Next Generation Plan, a programme of improvement and enhancement actions which in Galicia will benefit a dozen Assets of Cultural Interest (BIC) and will involve a total investment of almost 23 million euros.
The acropolis of Monterrei, located in the Ourense municipality of the same name, is one of these monuments and the President of the Xunta de Galicia, Alfonso Rueda, travelled there last Tuesday to present his project of rehabilitation and cultural and tourist enhancement. With him were numerous regional, provincial and local authorities, such as the director of the Galician Tourism Agency, Nava Castro, and the president of the Ourense Provincial Council, Manuel Baltar, and also the president of the Galicia Tourism Cluster, Cesáreo Pardal.
All of them toured the acropolis and were able to examine on the ground the spaces on which action is planned thanks to the Xacobeo Next Generation Plan. In this regard, Alfonso Rueda, said that the works will be put out to tender at the beginning of next year and executed in two phases. In addition to Monterrei, the plan includes work on the Tower of Hercules (A Coruña), the Towers of West (Catoira), the Old Prison of Tui, the Castle of Santa Cruz (A Guarda), the archipelago of Sálvora, the Island of Ons, the banks of the river Lérez, the Ribeira Sacra, the historic-artistic site of Mondoñedo, the Pastime Park (Betanzos) and the House Museum of Valle-Inclán (Vilanova de Arousa), according to the Xunta.
