The 15 Festivals of International Tourist Interest in Galicia

  • These celebrations receive the distinction of the Ministry of Industry and Tourism, a recognition that is granted for their antiquity, roots, citizen participation, originality and diversity.

 

The Ministry of Industry and Tourism grants the distinction of ‘Festival of International Tourist Interest‘ to those celebrations that stand out for their antiquity, roots, citizen participation, originality and diversity. It is an honorary title that indicates the tourist attraction of the festivals, contributing to its promotion and consolidation at the national and international level.

 

Galicia is a land of celebrations: our fairs and festivals are a showcase of Galician culture, gastronomy and traditions. In total there are 15 events that have this distinction and that you should not miss in 2024:

 

  1. Santiago Apóstol Festival of Santiago de Compostela. Celebration in honor of the patron saint of the city and of Spain.
  2. Catoira Viking Pilgrimage. Commemoration of the Viking landings in the lands of Ulla.
  3. Ortigueira International Celtic World Festival. Celebration of Celtic musical tradition.
  4. Rapa das Bestas. Traditional celebration in which horses’ manes are cut.
  5. Corpus Christi of Ponteareas. It stands out for the production of impressive carpets of natural flowers.
  6. Holy Week in Viveiro. Brotherhoods and brotherhoods flood the streets of the parish to transmit the essence of this festivity.
  7. Holy Week in Ferrol. Lots of tradition and fervor, it offers emotional and solemn processions, with massive events.
  8. The Arribada of the Carabela Pinta a Baiona. It commemorates the arrival of the ship with the news of the discovery of America.
  9. Bonfires of San Xoán in A Coruña. Fire and pyrotechnics begin the most spectacular evening of the year.
  10. Cambados Albariño wine festival. Celebration that pays tribute to Albariño white wine.
  11. Xinzo de Limia Carnival. The longest carnival in Spain, starting three weeks earlier than normal.
  12. Lalín stew. It attracts thousands of visitors around the Sunday before Carnival.
  13. Carballiño Octopus Festival. Tribute to the grocery store tradition of the region.
  14. Arbo Lamprey Festival. One of the oldest celebrations in Galicia around this prehistoric fish.
  15. Lucus burns. Remembrance of the founding of the city of Lugo with its Roman past.
