A representation of the Xunta Directiva de la Asociación Hostelería Compostela, headed by its president Sara Santos, held a telematic meeting with the mayor of Santiago, Xosé Sánchez Bugallo, and the councillor for Tourism, Sindo Guinarte, to convey to them the demands that the Compostela group believes the City Council should address as soon as possible in the face of the Covid-19 crisis. Among other issues, they discussed the need to eliminate the taxes on the terraces, collection of garbage and sanitation during the mandatory closing time, as well as the reduction in payment of the IBI.
Thinking about the situation and the changes that hostellers will have to endure when the confinement is lifted and they can reopen their businesses, they also presented the idea of developing a reservation center that includes the restoration. Compostela’s hoteliers also showed their concern for the future of the Way of St. James by urging them to work together with the Xunta de Galicia on a series of measures that would offer safety guarantees to pilgrims. It was also agreed to continue to maintain contact for the implementation of various activities that will energize the sector a once the pandemic is over.
In addition, the local government informed Hostelería Compostela that from the Department of Tourism are working on a short-term plan of measures to promote the city in destinations which are expected to be favourable.
