According to a recent survey carried out by YouGov, Galicia is emerging as the least crowded tourist destination according to the perception of Spaniards, obtaining 21% of the votes. Asturias and Cantabria complete the podium, with 20% and 18% of the votes respectively.
This study is made up of 8 variables related to sustainability: overcrowding, access and availability of sustainable transportation, sustainable accommodation, respect and conservation of the natural environment, offer of tourist activities with low negative impact on the environment, positive impact on local community. through tourism and respect for authenticity and cultural tradition. Based on the data obtained for each destination in relation to these factors, and the importance that Spanish consumers give to each factor when traveling, a global sustainability coefficient is calculated for the monitored destinations.
The study highlights the importance of promoting sustainable tourism that avoids overloading popular destinations and promotes lesser-known alternatives. Equitable distribution of tourism can contribute significantly to the conservation of natural and cultural resources, while offering unique experiences to visitors.
Galicia is emerging as a refuge for those seeking to escape the crowds, as well as an example of a tourist destination that maintains a balance between the influx of visitors and the preservation of its identity and natural environment.
