Galicia consolidates its tourist growth during the summer season

  • The Galician hotel sector experienced an increase in profitability of 8% in July and August, while international tourism continues to consolidate.

Galicia has registered more than 4.8 million nights during the months of July and August, according to INE data. The trend towards more stable and higher quality tourism is consolidated, with longer stays and a more equitable distribution among the different municipalities of the Community. Furthermore, the hotel sector experienced an increase in profitability of more than 8%, with revenues reaching €140 million in this period.

Summer brought notable growth in destinations such as the Ribeira Sacra, with 27% more visitors, and Trevinca-Valdeorras, which registered an increase of 22%. The diversification of tourism throughout Galicia is one of the main objectives of the Xunta, driven in part by the Camino de Santiago, which generated more than 120,000 Compostelas between July and August, 15% more than the previous summer.

International tourism has also shown positive behavior, representing almost 30% of total demand so far this year. Visitors from countries such as Italy, Portugal, Germany and the United States were the most notable, contributing to a 5.5% increase in hotel accommodations. The growth of the American market stands out, increasing by 2%.

Deseasonalizing tourism

Throughout the year, tourism in Galicia has experienced a growth of 2% in the first eight months. This behavior reflects a trend towards deseasonalization of tourism, with increases in months outside of high season, which reinforces Galicia as an attractive destination throughout the year.

So far this year, there have been increases in travelers in the months of February, by more than 1%, and in May, by more than 15%. The data for the Camino de Santiago were higher, with increases of 10% in January in the number of Compostelas, 6% in February and 19% in May.
