Galicia starts 2025 with growth above the national average in travelers staying in hotels and pensions

  • The number of travelers staying in hotels and pensions in the community during January increased by 3.3%.

Galicia starts the year with positive figures in the hotel sector. According to data published last week by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the number of travelers staying in hotels and pensions in the community during January increased by 3.3% compared to the same month of the previous year, exceeding the national growth average of 2%.

In total, 179,837 people stayed in Galician hotel establishments in January, generating 317,129 overnight stays, which represents an increase of 1.7% compared to 2024. This growth is largely due to the boost in national tourism, with a 5% increase in travelers residing in Galicia and a 3% increase in those coming from other autonomous communities.

The Galician hotel sector has also managed to maintain its income level, reaching more than 12 million euros in January, a figure that remains above this threshold for the second consecutive year. In addition, these results consolidate the recovery of the sector, being above the pre-pandemic records, when in January 2020 11.7 million euros were invoiced and in 2019, 10.6 million.

Regarding the profile of visitors, 80% of overnight stays in hotels and pensions in Galicia corresponded to national tourists. Of these, 45% came from other autonomous communities, which means that almost one out of every two nights was contracted by travelers from outside the community. Domestic tourism, from residents in Galicia, represented 33%, while international tourism accounted for 21% of the total.

With these data, national tourism linked three consecutive years of growth in January, consolidating Galicia as a deseasonalized destination with an expanding hotel demand since the beginning of the season.
