Foreign tourism almost tripled in Galicia in the first half of the year

From Portugal and by road, the main profile of visitors arriving from other countries to the region.

The arrival of foreign visitors to Galicia has experienced a strong increase in the first half of the year. This is highlighted by those responsible for the Studies and Research Area of Tourism of Galicia in their analysis of the data from the National Institute of Statistics, which puts the increase at more than 186% compared to the same period in 2021. Between January and June of this year Galicia received just over half a million foreign visitors, which represents 1.7% of all foreign tourism arriving in Spain.

The data also show that Portugal continues to be the main source market for foreign visitors to Galicia, since 55% of the tourists arriving in the region from other countries during the first half of this year came from there (more than 278,000 people). The United States, with 7.8%, and France, with 5.8%, complete the podium, with 39,000 and 29,000 visitors from those countries. They are followed, in fourth position, by the more than 27,000 German tourists who came to Galicia between January and June of this year.

The preponderance of Portuguese visitors also meant that road was the main route of entry into Galicia: 68% of foreign tourists came to Galicia in this way, compared with just over 30% who came by air. Leisure and holidays were also the main reason that brought almost 75% of these visitors to Galicia, while 16% came for business.
