Xosé Merelles, the Director of Tourism of Galicia, presented the tourism and economic report for the past year, which highlights the sector’s significant contribution to wealth and employment.
Official data from the National Institute of Statistics confirm that 2025 was one of the best years on record and reinforce the strength of our tourism model based on quality, sustainability, and the region’s resources.
Tourism activity now accounts for over 10% of Galicia’s Gross Domestic Product and has a significant impact on sectors such as hospitality, transportation, commerce, culture, agriculture, and services.
The international market maintains a share of nearly 30% of demand and, for the third consecutive year, surpasses domestic tourism. Notable increases were seen in visitors from the US (+10.4%) and the UK (+14.6%), strategic markets due to their high spending levels.
US tourists spent an average of €282 and became the leading international market in terms of total expenditure, exceeding €200 million between January and September 2025.
Last year’s results highlight significant progress in reducing seasonality, with growth outside of peak season. January, May, and December all registered increases of over 4%, while June saw the largest increase in visitors, 6.7% higher than in 2024.
The Camino de Santiago (Way of St. James) continued to play a significant role last year. Six percent more Compostela certificates were issued than in 2024, with an increase in international pilgrims and strong growth in months like January and February.
Looking ahead to the coming years, Turismo de Galicia is working on actions aimed at improving the visitor experience, advancing the professionalization of the sector and strengthening quality, innovation and sustainability.
