The tourism sector will represent 12.6% of Spanish GDP, according to Exceltur

Tourism will once again make the difference for another year. According to a new report from Exceltur, the tourism sector will equal the 2019 figure this year and will reach 12.6% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This document also indicates that the sector will represent 21.8% of the total growth of the Spanish economy.

 

The tourism entity highlights that the growth of tourist activity in summer could be accentuated in autumn, as there is a tendency to lengthen the season.

 

Taking into account the dynamism of the summer and business expectations for the last quarter of the year, the association increased its estimate of nominal tourism GDP by three points, reaching 183,078 million euros, 16.3% above the 2019 level.

 

Positive balance

 

The summer of 2023 accelerates the evolution of tourism activity in Spain, with a growth of 17.3% compared to 2019. Differentiating by sector, hotels (+17.8%) and leisure companies and institutions (+15, 9%) close a summer with notable increases in their sales compared to 2019. Transportation companies follow, with an increase of 10.3%, and travel agencies, with 9% more.

 

Regarding foreign demand, it also intensified its growth in summer, mainly in terms of spending at destination (+16.9%).

 

The report highlights an especially positive balance in the northern communities, highlighting Galicia with an increase of 27%, ahead of communities such as Asturias, Cantabria, the Valencian Community, Andalusia, the Balearic Islands or the Canary Islands.
