Good start to the year for Galician tourist accommodations

Galicia reached in January the second highest number of travelers and overnight stays for that month in the historical series.

Hotel figures for the first month of this year increased by 40% compared to 2022.

The Galician tourism sector has started the year confirming the upward trend of 2022 and registering good data of travelers and overnight stays that allow it to touch in both cases the record of the historical series, marked in January 2020, on the eve of the beginning of the covid pandemic, according to data made public by the Area of Studies and Research of Galicia Tourism.

The 192,730 total travelers registered in January of this year represent an increase of 34.6% over last year and are just one point away from the historical figure of January 2020. The same is true for overnight stays, as the 360,000 at the beginning of 2023 represent an increase of 32% over 2022 and fall just 1,000 short of the record reached in the first month of 2020.

By sectors, the end of the double Holy Year Xacobeo 21-22 and the consequent decrease in the influx of pilgrims has been felt in the field of hostels, which have seen in the first month of this 2023 the number of visitors reduced by 33% compared to 2022 and the number of overnight stays by 36.8%. But these figures were amply offset by hotels and guesthouses. In the case of hotel establishments, the variation with respect to January last year was 40% more travelers, totaling 157,527, and the increase in overnight stays was 37.2%, reaching 270,029. In the case of pensions, the increase in travelers in January of this year with respect to the same month of 2022 was 31.6%, reaching a total of 21,533, and the increase in overnight stays was 22.9%, totaling 53,410.

For their part, campsites and rural tourism establishments experienced more modest increases, while tourist apartments suffered a slight decrease in the number of travelers (2.9% less), although the number of overnight stays increased (20.6% more).
