The Galician Entroido, a celebration with its own identity and tourist recognition

The Galician Entroido, a celebration with its own identity and tourist recognition

  • Up to 11 Galician carnivals are declared as “Festival of Tourist Interest”.
  • More than 175 municipalities have declared Carnival Monday or Tuesday or Ash Wednesday a holiday.

Entroido is a celebration with a long popular tradition. In Galicia, there are eleven carnivals that are recognized as being of tourist interest:

  • International Tourist Interest: Entroido de Xinzo de Limia.
  • National Tourist Interest: Entroido de Verín and Entroidos del Oriente Ourensano.
  • Tourist Interest of Galicia: Entroido de Cobres, Entroido de Laza, Entroido de Viana do Bolo, Folión Tradicional do Entroido de Manzaneda, Xenerais do Ulla, Entroido de Maceda, Entroido de Vilariño de Conso, Entroido da Sardiña in Marín.

Besides the costumes, the participatory spirit, and the desire for fun, there’s something else that characterizes this time of year: the gastronomic feasts. The star of the show is pork, accompanied by potatoes, turnip greens, chickpeas… and for dessert, “filloas” (Galician crepes), “orellas” (fried dough pastries), “bica” (a type of sponge cake), and coffee liqueur.

This year’s program can be found on the Galicia Tourism website.
