“Rethinking Tourism”, theme of the next World Tourism Day

UNWTO invites to join the celebration on 27 September by reflecting on the need for a more sustainable, inclusive and resilient sector.

The countdown to the celebration of World Tourism Day, which has been commemorated every 27 September since 1980, has already begun. The events promoted by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) will be held on this occasion under the slogan “Rethinking tourism” with the aim of “rethinking the growth of the sector, both in terms of scope and transcendence”, according to the organisation. “This means putting people and the planet first, and bringing together all stakeholders, from governments and businesses to local communities, around a shared vision of a more sustainable, inclusive and resilient sector”.

UNWTO recalls that during 2022, international tourism figures have doubled compared to 2021 and that many destinations have reached and even surpassed post-pandemic figures. It is therefore a crucial moment for the sector and for its consideration as a crucial pillar of development and progress. “The potential of tourism is enormous, and we have a shared responsibility to ensure its full realisation. On the occasion of World Tourism Day 2022, UNWTO calls on everyone, from tourism workers to tourists themselves, as well as small businesses, large corporations and governments, to reflect and rethink what we do and how we do it,” explains UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili.

The central events of the 27 September celebration will take place on the island of Bali, Indonesia, and will include a roundtable discussion with local tourism representatives. In addition, the UNWTO wants its member states, non-member states and other organisations and institutions to join the day by organising their own celebrations under the common theme of “Rethinking Tourism”.
