113 blue flags for the galician beaches

  • Galicia is the community with the third most awards, only surpassed by Valencia (135) and Andalusia (127).
  • Of the 117 Galician plays that opted for this distinction, 113 got it.
  • The sandbanks of Caranza (Ferrol) and O Adro (Vigo) have a blue flag for the first time.

Galicia gets 113 beaches awarded with the blue flag this 2023, distributed among 34 municipalities. This international badge, created by the Foundation for Environmental Education (EFE), and managed in Spain by the Association for Environmental and Consumer Education (ADEAC), is already celebrating 35 years of experience. The mission of this distinction is to promote sustainability in the tourism sector through environmental education, environmental protection and sustainable development practices.

The Galician community becomes the third nationally with the most awards, only surpassed by Valencia (with 135) and Andalusia (with 127). This year, the beaches of Caranza, in Ferrol, and O Adro, in Vigo, have their distinction for the first time.

In addition to the beaches, this initiative also honors marinas and centers. For a beach or port to be eligible for the award, it must maintain excellent water quality, comply with environmental legislation, be accessible and safe, have services and environmental information. The blue centers, on the other hand, have to promote environmental education on the coast, knowledge of the environment and the leisure alternatives available in the area.

On the one hand, with the addition of Pedras Negras (in O Grove), this summer there will be 12 marinas that will fly a blue flag. On the other hand, the Galician blue centers received a total of 14 distinctions between nature classrooms, visitor centers and environmental education facilities.

If we divide by provinces, the most awarded was Pontevedra, with 58 sandy beaches and 6 recognized ports. It is followed by A Coruña, with 37 sandbanks and 5 port facilities. In the case of the province of Lugo, there were 18 beaches and 1 marina that received the award.

These results consolidate Galicia for another year as a coastal reference and an ideal destination to enjoy the best beaches, prepared for the summer tourist campaign.
