Núñez Feijóo advanced this balance in the Consello de la Xunta in which he announced the setting up of the Xacobeo 2021 Organizing Commission.

The president of the Xunta de Galicia, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, advanced a first tourism balance of 2017 after the Executive Council in which he announced the launch of the commission that will be responsible for the organization of the Xacobeo 2021. According to the president of the regional government, taking into account the data from the accumulated January-November 2017 and taking into account the forecast of sustained growth that has been experienced so far of around 3%, Galicia would exceed 5 million visitors in 2017, a figure never reached before.
But beyond this figure, Feijóo highlighted that the growth of the tourism sector has been experienced in other aspects, such as the number of overnight stays, which are expected to exceed 10.6 million, the average stay, which increases around two points, the occupancy, which grows more than 7 points and the profitability of the hotel sector, which rises around ten points.
These figures consolidate the upward trend that tourism has been experiencing in the last five years and which has allowed increasing occupancy especially in the hotel sector, tourist apartments and rural tourism. Among the positive data, Feijóo highlighted, as well as the tourism sector as a whole, the importance of having managed to grow in the middle and low season, working to consolidate Galicia as an attractive destination out of high season.
In addition, results have been improved in foreign tourism, which has continued to grow in recent years to account for almost 30% of the total number of travelers that Galicia receives.
Feijóo also recalled that throughout 2017 the Camino de Santiago experienced a growth of 8.3% compared to 2016, surpassing, for the first time, the 300,000 pilgrims. The number of cruise liners that arrived in Galicia was around 340,000, which represents an increase of more than 12% compared to the even period of 2016; and global passenger numbers at airports increased by 6.8% until November, recording nearly 4.5 million passengers in the community as a whole, with a general growth in the three airports.
In relation to national tourism, the Galician Community is the eighth in terms of number of passengers and bolts, placing itself at the head of the autonomous regions of the Cantabrian coast, grouped under the brand España Verde, ahead of Asturias, Cantabria and the Basque Country.
Feijóo concluded by stressing that the figures demonstrate the progressive achievement of the objectives of the 2020 Tourism Strategy,”because we are on track to continue to increase tourist inflow, tourists come all year round, to have more and more international demand and to stay longer and spend more time”.
